Ladies and gentlemen, dear colleagues,
After four days of meeting and discussing on the future of European transport, we have come to the end of the 2010 edition of Transport Research Arena. The end of this conference is also the beginning of a further and more intense cooperation between all stakeholders of road transport.
After 3 plenary sessions, 9 strategic sessions and 36 thematic sessions on the different aspects of greener, safer and smarter road transport for Europe I am convinced we have made an important step in the right direction. The current and future challenges we are facing are temendous and we should and will work together in order to deal with these important issues.
This edition of TRA provided a framework in which policies for society, transport, industry and innovation were brought together. Strategies for the future were developed. By combining our efforts we can increase the competitiveness of Europe throughout the world.
As a participant, I hope you have seized the opportunity given to you by this third edition of TRA to meet stakeholders in the sector of road transport, to be introduced to innovations and to discuss the current and future challenges for Europe.
In the past four days you had the opportunity to visit the exhibition. The exhibitors showed the latest developments in their sector . On Wednesday, we opened the exhibition to the general public. The large number of visitors proved that the general public has a great interest in the future of road transport and is keen on discovering the latest developments in this area.
Next to the experts in the field of road transport, Transport Research Arena 2010 gave the opportunity to young researchers to present their findings. As we all are discussing the future of transport in Europe it is important to welcome the new researchers who will be of capital importance in shaping the future of road mobility.
At the end of this successful edition of Transport Research Arena, I hope everyone has gained new insights and has established new business contacts. I hope we can go back home with inspiring thoughts and innovative ideas we can put into practice in our own countries.
I would like to thank the organizing committee for all their effort and the excellent work they have done for this edition of TRA2010. I would also like to thank the program committee for offering us an extensive, well-balanced and above all interesting and varied program.
The next organizing team of TRA2012 will be able to build on the expertise and experience of the past three editions.
Although the Transport Research 2010 has come to an end, you can still attend a number of special sessions this afternoon. You can find all the details in the final program.
I hope you have all enjoyed TRA 2010 and have had an excellent time here in Belgium, the heart of Europe. I also hope you had the chance to take a glimpse of what Belgium and Brussels have to offer and it would be a pleasure to welcome you back on a next visit to our country.
In two years we will meet in Athens, the cradle of our common history and culture. There we will go further in innovating and optimizing the transport sector for all people involved.
It's with great pleasure and enthusiasm that we keep the flame burning, until we hand over the torch to Greece for the next TRA.
See you in Greece 2012
